Car Tune Ups

6 Quick Maintenance Tips for Older Cars

Proper maintenance is the key to bringing out the best in your vehicle. If you have an older car, it is critical to keep a routine schedule of care to get the most life out of your beloved automobile. Many of the following tips can be simple to do yourself, but the experts here at Auto Specialty of Lafayette, Inc. still recommend coming in for a tune-up at least once a year.

1. Change Your Oil

High mileage vehicles should have their oil and oil filter changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Using high mileage, full synthetic oil lasts longer and contains oil additives and conditioners to help combat engine wear and sludge.

2. Check the Fluids

Along with changing oil, keep all fluids filled properly. Keep an eye on transmission fluid, engine coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield wiper fluid. A good rule of thumb is to check these levels once a month and/or before long trips.

3. Change out Spark Plugs

Depending upon the type, the lifespan of a spark plug can be as low as 30,000 miles. Bad spark plugs will cause your engine to idle roughly and will result in high fuel consumption and lack of acceleration. Changing out spark plugs can boost your vehicle’s horsepower and MPGs.

4. Change the Belts

The timing belt or chain connects the crankshaft to the camshaft. Depending upon the type of engine you have, you may need to replace the timing belt after 100,000 miles. Check your owner’s manual to see your engine details.

5. Keep It Cool

Flushing the cooling system, or a radiator flush, is a way to prevent further corrosion by adding cleaner to the system then adding new anti-freeze. It is generally recommended to flush your system every 30,000 miles or five years.

6. Keep It Clean!

A great way to extend the life of your vehicle is by simply keeping it clean! Washing your car regularly, cleaning the inside, and changing air filters not only keep your car fresh but give you a chance to inspect for any other hidden problems.
