Diesel Engines

Experience These 4 Benefits with a Diesel Engine

Are you considering the purchase of a diesel-run vehicle, but aren’t sure if a diesel-powered engine is right for you or your lifestyle? Maybe you’ve never owned a diesel-powered vehicle before and have questions about its efficiency and how well it runs. Auto Specialty of Lafayette, Inc., understands the complexities of how a diesel engine operates. While this type of engine is not for everyone, there are a few amazing benefits of owning one of these powerful vehicles.

1. Greater Efficiency

You may be surprised to find out that diesel engines are more efficient than engines powered by gasoline. In fact, diesel engines provide double the efficiency over gasoline-run engines. Gasoline-powered engines run at 20% efficiency while diesel-powered engines run at 40% efficiency.

2. Cleaner Fuel

Diesel fuels are presently burning cleaner than they ever have before. New standards released by the Environmental Protection Agency, such as low sulfur diesel fuel for both on-road and off-road vehicles, are partially responsible for this eco-friendly change. New technology is also helping to reduce diesel emissions as well.

3. Less Flammable

While it is well-known that gasoline is extremely flammable, what is less well-known is that diesel fuel is much less flammable than gasoline. Diesel fuel has a high flash point, making it more difficult to combust, whether it’s inside or outside of the engine.

4. No Spark Plugs

Did you know that diesel engines do not use spark plugs? In regular gasoline engines, spark plugs provide the spark that ignites the fuel and helps the engine produce power. In diesel engines, the internal combustion chamber contains heated compressed air, which is what ignites the engine. There is no need for spark plugs to get the engine started in a diesel-run vehicle.
